Travis James: San Francisco, CA, United States; Personality: Introverted. Quiet, reserved, and always analyzing. I have a very small group of friends that know who the real me is and what I am about. My personality leads to me being very reserved and private. I am not one for small talk. As a wise teacher once said, "If you talk too much with little meaning, you will make mistakes, therefore speak in moderation, only when necessary." I am very hard to read, as I don't wear my feelings on the outside. I would rather spend my time in the background watching the interactions of people rather than be part of those interactions.

A Little History

Well, where do I start. Things are going well here. I live in the Upper Terrace District of San Francisco. I live with my partner of 4 years, Shando and our two dogs, Bella and Tucker, our two hamsters, Lucy (we lost Lucy January 1, 2011) and Ellen(we lost Ellen in the Fall of 2010), and our two goldfish, Pinkerton and Johnny Zoom Zoom. Yes, we have a zoo and I think when we move we are going to get an African Grey parrot.

After years in the hospitality business and lack of happiness with the positions and not feeling like I was contributing to society I spent some time with a counselor and decided that I needed to return to school and pursue my true passions, science and psychology. With that, I decided to return to school and enrolled at City College of San Francisco.

After my second semester, Shando and I decided that it would be best to make some sacrifices, scale things back and have me focus 100% of my efforts into my studies and research. It has paid off, I am currently on the Dean’s Honors List, receive several scholarships and grants that help to offset some of the financial obligations I have. After that I plan to stay at Berkeley and work on my Masters degree and hopefully be able to teach some lower division classes and start my work in research.

I am interested in doing research in Industrial and Organizational Psychology Occupational Health Psychology. I am interested in the psychology of work environments and employee/employer relations. As well as the psychology involved in psychosocial characteristics of workplaces that contribute to the development of health related problems with workers and the workplace.

Recently I have come to the conclusions that if the world is going to be a better place, that we need to give back to our communities, that we need to spend time teaching and giving our time to those that will inherit this world from us. Coming to that decision has guided me in my drive to enter teaching in some capacity after I complete my degree.

Other than school, I spend a lot of time at home. I became a home body about the same time I returned to school. When I gave up drinking about 18 months ago I became a true home body. Once we moved into our new place that didn't include roommates, I began to really enjoy my time at home. I found that drinking was a BIG waste of time and didn’t lead to productive outcomes. It was one of the best decisions that I ever made and I have been really happy finding a new life within sobriety.
